Should you go to Thailand as planned? Should you cancel your trip to Thailand?
Is Thailand safe? Is it safe for Americans in Thailand?
What if there were to be another coup in Thailand?
The simple answer is yes Thailand has a long history of unrest but that history is limited to civil disobedience and general disruption, nearly always in Central Bangkok.
The current protests are a dispute between various political factions; they are nothing to do with foreigners. Thai’s absolutely do not involve non- Thai’s in their political problems the absolute opposite is actually true, Thai business is Thai business as far as they are concerned.
There is a chance of violence, which is true, again traditionally central Bangkok is the only place touched by this as that is where the root of the dispute is. Historically there is little or no activity of a street violence nature outside of the main gathering spots in a couple of areas of Bangkok.
If you think that you will be walking along the street with your family and you will be attacked by an angry mob of rioting Thai’s that is just fantasy. Not only Thai authorities, but regular Thai people would stop any foreigner that might be wandering into a protest area, they simply do not want any foreigners involved.
If you are staying in Bangkok you will still be able to go about your daily tourist business un-molested. Is it 100% safe in Bangkok? no of course not, it’s a huge city, but it is surprisingly safe for visitors, providing they are not outrageously dumb and do things they would not do at home at 3am.
What if there were to be another coup? Again this is not the business of foreigners as far as Thai’s are concerned, during the last coup a couple of years ago, there were tanks on the streets of Bangkok many of which were famously photographed when bar girls took to dancing on them, hardly the stuff of 70s central American coups.
If you are planning on visiting other areas such as the North or the beaches of the Southern islands, they are physically and psychologically a huge distance from the capital and have a far more laid back atmosphere.
If you have ever spent any amount of time in Thailand you will know that the Thai mentality is just not geared to long drawn out disputes and extreme political violence. If you use normal caution and care there is no reason why Thailand should pose any untoward threat to Americans, Europeans or other westerners.
